Evaluation of ATB 32GN System for Identification of Vibrio vulnificus

Abstract
Vibrio vulnificus sepsis is one of the most fatal infectious diseases in Korea. Therefore, it is very essential for this bacteria to be identified fast and accurately. ATB 32GN system (API system, La Balme-Les Grottes, France) is a semiautomatic
system
for identification of the fermentative as well as non-fermentative bacteria. In this paper we evaluated the ATB 32GN system for identification of V. vulnificus with 50 confirmed strains. After 24 hour incubation, ATB 32GN correctly identified 41
strains(82%) to species level, and misidentified one stain(2%) as Aeromonas salmonicida. The other 8 strains(16%) were correctly identified only after 48 hour incubation. Excellent identification was achieved in 36%, and very good identification,
good
identification and acceptable identification in 30%, 28% and 4%, respectively. Compared with biochemical profiles of reference strains of ATB manual, there were major differences in % positivity of mannitol and histidine showing 100% and 6%
positivity,
respectively.
